Wilderness Experience

Important Details

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: After acceptance and closer to the trip dates, a meeting location will be determined and detailed. 

COVID-19: Some activities may be adjusted to facilitate compliance with the current health mandates such as physical distancing or wearing of face coverings. Participants may cancel at any time and receive a full refund including the application deposit. If you need to cancel, please let us know right away so we can open space for another participant. 

FOOD: Tasty, prepared-ahead nondairy vegetarian meals will be provided for participants to carrry with them. If you need gluten-free meals, please mark that on your application.

FINANCIAL: The camp fee of $240 covers meals, transportation, and permit fees. A refundable application deposit of $50 is due at the time of application, and is deducted from the balance due. Limited needs-based financial aid may be available. Please contact the camp office for more information. 

FLIGHT INFORMATION: Begin looking for discount airfares starting in the late winter or early spring. Check sites such as kayak.com and southwest.com for sales. Please be sure your application has been accepted prior to finalizing travel plans.

LODGING: Enjoy an experience of the real outdoor wilderness! Participants will stay in their own tents they pack in to the lodging site. 

PHONES/ELECTRONICS: We believe that the Wilderness Experience should be a place to make friends, enjoy nature, and learn about God. To best acheive these goals, camp policy requires that phones, games, computers, media players, etc., be left at home or checked into customs for safekeeping. Cell service will be limited or unavailable. Participants needing to place approved calls (i.e. family emergency), may do so under the guidance of staff in locations where there is service. 

TRANSPORTATION: Bus service from/to Spokane International Airport is available for participants arriving by 10:30 am on Sunday, July 31 or August 7, and flying out after 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 4 or 11. If you are planning to drive to the Spokane airport to meet with the group, the pickup/drop-off times are 10:30 am on Sunday, July 31 or August 7, and 3:30 pm on Thursday, August 4 or 11. The camp cannot provide pickup/drop-off service outside of these times. 

STAFF: Staff are carefully selected based on their commitment to the Lord, high Christian standards, abilities, and love for young people. A high staff-to-camper ratio is maintained. 

VOLUNTEERS/PARENTS: Due to group size limits from the US Forest Service or other wilderness organizations, we can only take up to 12 participants. In order to accommodate as many youth participants as possible, we regret that we cannot accommodate parent volunteers. 

Camp Codes

COMPETITION: The spirit of cooperation and encouragement is encouraged. Competition in all its forms is discouraged.

DRESS CODE: Girls: Skirts with leggings or loose pants with a long shirt or tunic. No crop tops or low necklines. Boys: No shorts or tank tops. Shirts should be tucked in. No baggy or low-riding pants. Both: Clothing should be moisture-wicking (not cotton) and must be sturdy to withstand the rigors of backpacking. Nothing sleeveless. Avoid ungodly words or pictures on clothing. 

FOOD: Campers may not keep food items in their lodgings. Participants will carry their meals in their backpacks and store them in bear bags when not traveling. Food for special diets may be covered by prior arrangement.

ITEMS TO LEAVE AT HOME: Portable media players, cell phones, food, gum, electronic or card games, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, secular reading material, makeup, nail polish, jewelry (including rings), weapons, or anything that would detract from the goals and atmosphere of of the Wilderness Experience.

SOCIAL RELATIONS: YD camp programs encourage friendly interaction among participants. However, intense and/or romantic relationships between participants are not permitted.

WHAT TO BRING: Participants willl be responsible for providing their own backpacking equipment. YD has a limited supply of equipment available to rent. Call for more information. A list of what to bring will be included in the acceptance packet. 

How to Apply

WHO SHOULD APPLY: Young Disciple Youth Wilderness Experience is for young people ages 14–18 who want to grow in their relationship with the Lord. Those without this objective should not apply. Any participant who refuses to abide by the set policies will be sent home at his/her expense and will forfeit his/her fees. 

TO APPLY: Each applicant should completely and personally fill out an application form. If the application is not accepted, the deposit will be returned.
